Talks possible with present
govt: Maoist leader
At a time when chances of dialogue between the
government and the Maoists appear to be slim with both sides remaining
noncommittal towards a negotiated settlement, a central leader of the Maoist
party has said that talks with the royal government are still possible.
Nepal Samacharpatra daily Wednesday quoted Maoist leader Santosh Budha Magar
as saying that the Maoists were ready to hold talks with the government
"provided it takes the ceasefire in positive light and becomes ready to
ensure more rights to the people.
We are ready to sit for talks if the state goes one step forward than our
party, Budha Magar said
addressing a mass meeting organised by the Maoist-aligned
Maoist supremo Prachanda
declared a three-month long unilateral ceasefire on September 3. However, the
Maoist leaders have time and again ruled out the possibility of dialogue with
the government headed by King Gyanendra.
They said they were keen to sit for talks with the parties to forge an alliance
against the autocratic royal regime.
Budha Magar clarified, We are holding talks with the political parties and things
are moving in positive direction. They have been appealed to take our
initiation positively. If they fail to pave way for a joint movement on a
practical ground, the nation may witness unprecedented difficulty.
Arguing that the King could play another game in the name of revival of House
of Representatives, the Maoist leader urged the political parties to gear up
for constituent assembly, a key demand of the Maoists.
The ball is in the court of the state, political parties and the civil society,he further said, If the state resorts to massive
oppression, we would urge the political parties and civil society to
collaborate with us to oppose such a move.nepalnews.com mk Sept 28 05
